source: https://voicesoncentralasia.org/

Today’s post was created by Nilufar whose study experience is quite extraordinary. Why? This amazing girl is studying in Uzbekistan but in English style AND English law. Not to mention, that we are university buddies, both studying at the University of Westminster, not on the same campus, though :)

Leaving you now with Nilufar.

Assalomu alaykum! Big hello from Uzbekistan!

I am Nilufar, and I am honoured to have a chance to lead you through the tour around my university – Westminster International University in Tashkent, and to tell you about my big passion – Law!

WIUT is known for its very rich social life, diversity of nations and quality knowledge that it gives to each student. You may see some moments from life in our second home in photos ☺

Founded in 2002, it is the first international university in Uzbekistan and till today it does not lose its superiority. After renovation and reconstruction, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) opened its doors to the first 120 students on the Level 3 Certificate of International Foundation Studies (CIFS) course and the BA (Hons) Business Administration degree. The goal in establishing WIUT was to enable citizens of Uzbekistan and other countries to obtain an internationally recognized bachelor’s degree in Commercial Law, Business Administration, Business Information Systems, and Economics, all validated by the University of Westminster (UoW). From 2005, WIUT has started offering the internationally accredited Master’s degrees. Since the university’s establishment, the student population has grown to over 3,000. You may obtain more information here.

Now, let me turn to the main purpose of this story. So, you may have already asked, how is it to study law in Uzbekistan? It is exciting! It is hot and full of joyful moments! The BA (Hons) in Commercial Law course at WIUT offers students the chance of a rewarding educational experience in itself that would enable graduates to be employed in a range of careers full-time. Undergraduate students study 120 credits per year. The course structure is validated by the University of Westminster every 5 years. The LLM International Commercial Law course provides an overview of the main commercial law issues that practitioners can expect to encounter on a regular basis, all validated by the University of Westminster in London. This course is unique in Central Asia in terms of providing an opportunity to study commercial law in accordance with international standards. Both degrees provide an International Diploma on graduation.

I am currently level 5 (3rd year) student in BA (Hons) in Commercial Law. To note, WIUT sets 1st year as foundation, and starting from the 2nd year students choose their faculty among offered ones. In level 4 you get basic knowledge in such areas as Public Law, Contract Law, Tort Law and Legal Skills. What is more, you have a choice of 2 modules among Criminal Law, Mooting and Advocacy, and ADR. The whole year you obtain not only theoretical, but deep practical knowledge, which is boosted in moot trials and many other practical activities. Regarding level 5, you make more profound approach, where you are waited for EU Trade Relations Company Law, International Trade Law, Property Law, Intellectual Property Law, Employment Law, Banking Law, Sports Law and many other cool modules. And the final year prepares you to be a real lawyer through Public International Law, International Commercial Arbitration, International Economic Law, Internet Law, Corporate Crime, Corporate Governance and Law of Finance. Of your choice, there is also a Dissertation in Law. I also should note that after graduation, law students are employed at United Nations, WHITE & CASE, GRATA, CENTIL LAW, World Trade Organisation, and many other organisations. As you may understand, WIUT Commercial Law may become the greatest opportunity for you to become a versatile international lawyer.

Turning to more fascinating point of my tour, I would like to tell you about some extracurricular activities that WIUT Commercial Law organizes regularly. First is about well-known the world’s largest moot court competition - JESSUP Competition, which is held every year at my university as well. Here, I want to put Mark Luz’s definition about this project: “The Jessup is one of those incredibly rare experiences that transcends law school and impacts your life for decades thereafter”.

Then, Law Talks, also very informative project, where you are so lucky to get acquainted with professional lawyers, get from them useful advice for your future career path.

Another broad project that is held at WIUT, is Model United Nations. Recently, WIUT has reached a new milestone in the history of MUN in our country - the 1st International MUN Conference 2017. Since 2012 WIUT MUN Club has organised 5 Annual Conferences, and the 6th one was on international level!

As may be seen, there is no single reason for not choosing WIUT Commercial Law! So, use your every opportunity to enjoy life at this course!
