Creative Ways to Develop Commercial Awareness

by Harry Clark, Future Trainee Solicitor at Baker McKenzie, Podcast Host at More From Law, Founder of harryclarklaw.com, content writer, and producer of resources for aspiring lawyers

Keeping up to date with and developing your commercial awareness as a skill is an important habit to incorporate into your daily routine. Here’s a few suggestions for how to go about it!

Read, watch or skim the news

Ensuring you’re aware of what’s going on in the world - business or otherwise - is fundamentally important to developing your commercial awareness. Even 10 minutes spent catching up with the latest headlines around the world is a great starting point. There are plenty of services out there which will also collate all of this information for you to save yourself the trouble of knowing what to look for - Finimize, Watson’s Daily, LittleLaw and The Business Update all being good examples!

Get creative with how you learn...

To keep your commercial awareness commitments interesting, it can be a good idea to find news ways to absorb all of the information you’re taking in through your reading. Mindmaps, flowcharts, one-pager summaries, tables and other visual aids are all great ways to help you piece together what you’re reading and keep it fresh in your mind.

...and listen!

Whilst keeping how you’re recording and making notes on commercial stories is important, so is how you receive them! Increasingly, commercial-awareness-centered resources can take the form of as podcasts, videos and live events/webinars. They’re a great way to get either bite-sized updates on in-depth knowledge on areas. My own podcast, More From Law, also has a number of episodes dedicated to developing commercial awareness. Many of these resources are often free to access and cover almost every facet of law.

Take part in competitions

Finally, a great way to put all of the above into practice is to take part in commercial-awareness themed competitions and events. Not only are there prizes and prestige up for grabs, but it’s a great opportunity to test what you know in a variety of formats.

If you’re looking for your next competition - I’ve got you covered! I recently launched a commercial awareness competition, open to everyone and doable entirely at home. Check it out here!
